![]() A common theme keeps reappearing in conversations with patients, doctors, and friends. Many question what the role of a PT is in healthcare. As a physical therapist this question surprises me, although it shouldn’t. I have been involved and around the world of PT for 10 years, and it is hard for me to think of a time when I did not know the role of a PT. The following paragraphs are a succinct explanation into a PT’s role in healthcare. Physical therapists evaluate and treat patients with conditions which limit their ability to move and function. We treat numerous musculoskeletal and neuromuscular conditions, affecting muscles, ligaments, nerves, bones, and joints. PT’s also work on pre-hab (getting patients stronger before surgery or to prevent surgery) and injury reduction for athletes. Physical therapy is an evidence-based treatment that is conservative and cost-effective, and can help patients avoid the cost and trauma of surgery and the side-effects of prescription medications. Physical therapists are also highly educated healthcare professionals. All graduating physical therapists enter the profession with doctorate of physical therapy (DPT) degree. And many PT’s have additional certifications and specialties as well. At Hudsonville Physical Therapy we strive to maintain current in the ever-changing healthcare world. Our clinicians have the experience, passion, and knowledge to help you avoid injuries or rehab from one! Mike van Der Laan PT, DPT

I've been planning to hire a physical therapist because I noticed that my back is aching. I agree with you that a physical therapist could help a patient move and function properly. It's also great to learn that an excellent PT will be able able to provide cost-effective treatment.
